Home SecurityHome Security - Home Security: Burglary Prevention

Burglaries comprise a big part of various crimes that happen all over the world. Each crime has its own prevention methods. In the case of burglaries, home security is a major crime prevention method. A properly protected house is less likely to be broken into then an unprotected house. Security systems not only allow the prevention of theft but can also help to stop the theft that is being in progress. However, there are several techniques that can prevent the theft attempt instead of catching it in progress. In order to do that you will need to make sure that a thief does not select your house as an easy opportunity to break into. Thieves will look at many houses and will try to break in only if they believe the house is unprotected, lightly protected or the
protection level in inadequate for the amount of valuables stored in the house. To prevent the possible break in attempt, you should make sure that your house looks secure.

There are several steps that you will need to follow. First of all, if a thief will believe that there is no one at home, he will more likely try to break into the empty house. This is especially true for the cases when the owner is gone for a long time (on vacation or a long work trip, for example). In this case you should definitely try to make sure that your house looks occupied even if you are gone. There are several ways to do that. If you are participation in the neighborhood watch program, ask you neighbors to pick up your mail. Full mailbox is a clear sign that the owner is gone. If there is no one who can do that visit your post office and put your mail on hold there.

Also, if your finances permit, hire a housekeeper. Your neighbors may be able to provide you with advice on who you should hire. You can also install a system that turns on your lights, TV and radio at preprogrammed times of the day. There are several other ways to make your house look occupied. If you are going on vacation, you can also check a vacation security guide.

The next step in preventing a possible burglary attempt is to make sure that your house looks secured and protected. The house that looks secured is less likely to attract a thief then a house that looks unprotected. There are several steps that you need to follow if want to make your house look secure. First of all make sure that your doors and windows look strong and secure. Also make sure you keep your doors closed. You should also lock your windows when you leave the house. If you have an entrance gate, you should make sure it is closed at all times.

Your yard tools should be locked in the shed since the thief can simply try to steel them. These tools (ladders, for example) can also be used in a burglary attempt. Make sure that have some type of alarm installed inside the house. The alarm monitoring service is more preferable but even a simple siren alarm increases your security. Install a motion detector light outside of the house. If someone gets close to your house, the motion detector will be activated and will turn on the light.

The next step is to make sure that a thief does not believe you have something very expensive in the house. It is always a good idea to keep your most valued items in the safe deposit box at the bank. However, if you need to keep your valuables at home, do not place them somewhere where they can be seen from the outside of your house (near the widows, for example). If you have a safe, make sure it is installed in a hidden place. You should also never leave a spare key near the door. This seems logical, but you will be surprised how many people still do it. If a thief sees you hiding a key, he will assume that your house is unsecured. If you loose a key, you should reinstall your lock to prevent the possibility of someone finding your key and using it to break in.
